I've noticed that I move away from negatives consequences with much more vigor than I move towards my desires. I loves challenges. They provide me with the opportunity to either step up & succeed / or to fail & learn. That's why my dream match up would be to face the top canadian boxer available: Neven Pajkic. If that match up fails to materialize I'll gladly face anyone who can provide me a significant opportunity to climb up the rankings. I'd gladly offer Eric Martel a rematch. While I had been calling him out for a while, he didn't have to face me. He already had a fight scheduled for the canadian championship in April. I will be rooting for him to win the title. A win on his part would set the stage for our rematch to be held with the canadian heavyweight title on the line.

<div "Every little moment matters," Louis says.

Louis is part of a new club that takes exercise for the brain every bit as seriously as exercise for the body. It's a growing movement that's swept up 15 million users of Lumosity. Smaller rivals such as Posit Science and MindSparke are also vying in this arena.

A screenshot of Lumosity's iPhone app.

San Francisco-based Lumos Labs' Lumosity attracted $32.5 million in a third round of venture-capital funding in June.

Lumosity works on the Internet but also has an iPhone app. The start-up plans to use the funding to jump onto apps for Android and Apple's iPad as well as to build up its current Web-based brain workouts.

"Your brain, in some ways, is like a muscle," says Tim Chang, a partner at Norwest Venture Partners, which invested in Lumos Labs. "It needs to be kept in shape."

That was the logic of Lumosity co-founders Michael Scanlon, David Drescher and Kunal Sarkar. In 2005, the company was started to fill a void in brain-exercising software.

"People end up using it for very different reasons, in jobs or things that they care about," says Scanlon, chief scientific officer of Lumos Labs.

Brain-training software is in its early phases. But industry analysts believe it's a lucrative market that taps into people's obsession with health.

Research firm IDC says brain-training games such as Lumosity fall within a sector for education apps, which represent a $150 million market worldwide in Apple's App Store. IDC forecasts the fast-growing group will expand to a more than $1.5 billion market in 2015.

"A lot of the physical-fitness market will carry over into the mind-fitness field because the two are linked," IDC analyst Scott Ellison says.

'Gamification'

Navneet Setlur, a medical student at International American University in St. Lucia, uses Lumosity to expand his memory capacity and now beats the apps' games on a daily basis.

"I've been on Lumosity a couple hours a day ever since last June," Setlur says. "I have a lifetime membership, so it's going to be there forever."

And that's the product's hook: It doesn't feel like mindless, monotonous work. It's a game, and it's captivating, Chang says. "The part that's very compelling is the more you play, the more you learn about yourself," he says. "It's even more compelling in some ways than the gym."

Lumos Labs knows that learning can be more attractive when a game's involved. That's why its Lumosity software uses so-called gamification tactics in keeping its users interested.

Gamification is the notion of building gamelike elements into non-gaming applications, such as in brain-training software. In theory, it makes learning a more playful, enticing experience.

Silicon Valley is somewhat obsessed with the notion that gamification can improve business for a broad range of websites.

While researchers have not made an official statement endorsing Lumosity's effectiveness, Stanford researcher Shelli Kesler says the app shows promise.

She, with three other researchers, conducted a six-week study this year to test the app's ability to improve the mathematical skills of 16 girls with Turner syndrome, a disease known for its high risk for math disabilities.

Each played games on Lumosity that focused on practicing number sense, problem solving and calculations five days a week, 20 minutes a day. After six weeks, the majority of the girls' math scores had reached those of their peers.

"They made a switch so that their brain functions more similarly to a typically developing child," Kesler says.

Prior to the study, all girls were given lessons on different strategies to help conquer their mathematical struggles. Because there was no control group, the results could be skewed, Kesler says.

"Lumosity comes in by allowing a nice way of having kids and adults practice certain skills that they're weak at, but it doesn't necessarily give them the strategy," Kesler says. "You have to have a strategy sometimes, too."

Ongoing research

Although more research is needed to draw an actual conclusion, Kesler says Lumosity appears to dominate the digital brain fitness marketplace. "I think Lumosity is the best one out there so far, because it has a wide range of curriculum," she says.

However, other programs do exist, many of which are targeted to a specific audience.

MindSparke is another Web-based brain-fitness program that works to increase memory and the ability to multitask. Play the game 30 minutes a day for about a month, and your memory and attention span will jump more than 40%, according to the MindSparke website. Then there is Cogmed Working Memory Training. It offers a five-week training program for people with attention deficit disorder or other learning disabilities, victims of brain injuries or senior citizens. The program involves 25 computerized training sessions that take 30-45 minutes to complete.

Posit Science is a CD-based computer game that focuses on improving the brain speed and memory of aging people.

"It's a critical thing to speed up the brain so that it operates like you're young again," says Mike Merzenich, Posit Science's chief scientific officer.

Personalized mind workouts and brain speed, in particular, certainly helped Louis. Since the boxer's comeback, he boosted his ranking to the top 200 from his previous ranking of No. 625 in the world.

On dehydration...

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/07/on-dehydration.html

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/07/on-dehydration.html#comments

Uncategorized

I have been dehydrated most of my life. At a young age I disliked the taste of water, favoring any kind of purple drink to it. I became a casual heavy drinker in my 20’s, and consuming too much water would inconvenience me to the men’s room too often. I later became an athlete who learned rather roughly the importance of preventing dehydration.

Our hydration levels are mostly dependent on a trio of minerals called potassium, sodium and chloride. They are often referred to as electrolytes. Once consumed, potassium and sodium have a positive charge while chloride has a negative one. Since our bodies are made mostly out of water, electrolytes easily move back and forth through the cell membranes carrying nutrients in and waste products out.

From my standpoint on athletic performance, one of the most important roles played by these electrolytes is to carry impulses along our nerves. If each unit of electrolytes has the responsibility, amongst other tasks, to carry information along our nerves such as muscular contraction and relaxation, the lack of balance in our bodies’ water could create traffic or slow down the stream of information traveling from our brain & spinal cord to our muscles. This is how I explain to myself the drop of performance associated with dehydration. I have assumptions on the chain of events caused by dehydration.

www.fi.edu/learn/brain/stress.html

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/11/001102071632.htm

J'utilise personnellement GP3, par Advanced Genetics. C'est un produit pratique à consommé,grâce à son format en capsule, qui produit des résultats rapidement et il commandite ma carrière athlétique, ce qui est géniale.

http://AdvancedGenetics.ca/products/gp3.php

Concussions in Depth: Rehabilitation tips for contact sport athletes

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/05/concussions-in-depth-rehabilitation-tips-for-contact-sport-athletes.html

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/05/concussions-in-depth-rehabilitation-tips-for-contact-sport-athletes.html#comments

Uncategorized

In my effort to make lemonade out of lemons, listed here are some important points that helped me recover from a rather vicious concussion in a relatively short time span.con·cus·sion 1. A violent jarring; a shock.
2. An injury to an organ, especially the brain, produced by a violent blow and followed by a temporary or prolonged loss of function.

If you are a contact sport athlete, feel free to use whatever can be useful to you & disregard the rest, as there are very diverse clinical interpretations on the subject of concussions.
This article will be mainly focusing on Grade One concussions that are harder to identify because there is no loss of consciousness. It can often be a hidden injury. We may not necessarily know we’re suffering from one and many reasons could always compel us not to want anyone else to know that we are hurt.

When we do mention them in boxing circles, we generally refer to them as "flashes". Those I have experienced in the past involved noticing the coming impact, blinking and then feeling my visual screen turn to black and then back to live action. All of this usually happens throughout a few split seconds, such as a standing 8 count in amateur boxing.

The symptoms of a concussion can range from difficulty concentrating, irritability, insomnia, confusion, headaches, vomiting and depression.
I will be focusing further on depression because it could quickly snowball in an athletic or professional setting. If no proper time is taken off the ring/field, trying to maintain the same workload while depressed will most likely lead to failure and failure can most definitely lead to a deeper state of depression.
It is to my understanding from both self-analysis and research that concussions have cumulative effects. If, for example, an athlete gets two in a short time span, the second one will most definitely have symptoms that are far more severe than the first one.

Research gets a little blurry when it comes to defining what constitutes a proper time-out. It is undeniable that time is of the essence for a safe recuperation, but duration itself does not necessarily guarantee a successful recovery. By definition, a concussion is a harmful trauma to the brain, therefore, it made sense to me to treat it just as I would any other stress to my body tissue, since my previous strategies have mainly involved drinking the pain away, which now holds little value when considering:

- Alcohol is a depressant, which slows down the function of the central nervous system.
- The dehydration produced by alcohol at that moment could potentially have far more serious implications than a hangover, considering the human brain is composed of 75% of water.
- If you must; drinking an electrolytes based sports drink (Gatorade/Powerade) before going to bed can really help limits the damage.

I have had many unpleasant physical experiments over my the years, and getting knocked out is definitely amongst the most physically stressful ones that I've experienced. It is generally believed that stress is the cause of many human disorders & illnesses. Keeping that in mind, it is interesting to remember that stress isn't what happens to us but our reaction to what happens to us.

www.fi.edu/learn/brain/stress.html

To recover from the traumatic shock I have found great success in using Hydro-therapy, which consists of more or less 15 minutes of warmth, followed by 15 seconds of cold exposure and finished off with a 15 minute nap. This can be done at home in a hot bathtub and a cold shower or in style visiting some of Montreal's finest Spa locations:
www.spaescalesante.com
www.stromspa.com
www.scandinave.com
www.botabota.ca

Supplementation is unfortunately a taboo subject for most outside of bodybuilding circles, but I would suggest individually researching the subject further, because one of the many things I have recently learnt is that creatine has been clinically proven to enhance protection against traumatic brain injuries when consumed prior to being injured.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/11/001102071632.htm

I personally use a creatine based supplement called GP3 from Advanced Genetics. It is easy to take as it is capsule based, it produces fast results and they have been sponsoring my athletic career which is both awesome & extremely convenient.
http://AdvancedGenetics.ca/products/gp3.php

I felt compelled to share what helped me recover in a few weeks to raise awareness on the subject. I believe that no one needs to feel lifelong damage from head blows. I don’t wish that for myself or for anyone who steps between the ropes. This is a fighter’s perspective, but I believe concussions are only grave if you don't give them the attention they deserve.

Random thoughts on my last fight

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/03/random-thoughts-on-my-last-fight.html

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/03/random-thoughts-on-my-last-fight.html#comments

Uncategorized

I had an excellent physical preparation with excellent sparring & a precise game plan that my team & I came up with. I took another swing at doing my own physical preparation. My 1st attempts left me very depleted which didn't help in my rather soft 1st round defeat. I read everything I could find on the subject & removed whatever wasn't necessary to produce results. This lead me to decreased my morning workouts to two 15 minutes sessions & run sprints every 4th day. I adapted the protocols of the Colorado Experiment to suit my athetic purposes. Those workouts are outlined here:

I feel my willingness to do very weak when compared to my fear to not do. My willingness really wouldn't mind looking deeply into Babylon & the Rastafarian movement but my fear to not try to compete as best as I can & possibly regret it far outweighed it. Anyway, I've noticed my willingness' tendency to fluctuate while my fear are pretty constantly the same every year.

I had never felt so tensed before my a fight... a very unpleasant but addictive sensation to which most physical sport competitor can probably relate to. I had the best gym mates & friends rooting and advising me. They must a been super loud because I could hear them very clearly from the ring... interesting how the words we hear shape our thoughts

I was super stoked when I saw how the rating system in the boxing world value risky fights... I went from the nosebleed at 625th in the world to the top 200. This is really right up my alley that way. The fact that my chin is "suspect" at best + my desires to face whoever can provide me with a chance to jump up the rankings should provide plenty of sparks.

Modified Jump Lunge

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/01/modified-jump-lunge.html

http://www.slylouis.com/1/post/2011/01/modified-jump-lunge.html#comments

Uncategorized

This version of the jump lunges works the hamstrings and glutes pretty efficiently but since this is a plyometric version of the lunge, it targets mostly the nervous system.
